York County voters returned Sheriff Maurice Ouellette, Democrat, to office Tuesday night over Republican challenger Craig Gagne.

With 92 percent of the vote counted, Ouellette had 35,382 votes, or 53 percent to Gagne’s 30,835, or 47 percent.

Ouellette has served one term as sheriff and two as chief deputy before that and was making his first re-election bid.

Gagne, a former York County corrections officer and deputy, was making his first run for office after returning from a stint as a security consultant for the State department in Iraq.
