Police released few details Friday evening about the suspicious deaths of two people inside a house on Central Street in Westbrook.

Police said they are treating the deaths of the two people, an unidentified man and woman, as a homicide.

“At this point I would just characterize (the deaths) as suspicious,” Westbrook Police Chief Paul McCarthy said. “Until we know more from the autopsy, we’re going to proceed with caution and handle it as if it were a homicide.”

Lt. Brian McDonough of the Maine State Police said it didn’t appear anyone other than the two victims were involved in their deaths. However, he declined to characterize it as a murder/suicide. “They’re unexplained at this time,” he said.

McDonough declined to comment on how the victims died.

“It’s really early on in this investigation,” he said. “But we’re not seeing anything that is indicating that anyone else is involved in anything here. We feel comfortable with that at this stage. That could change, but I don’t think that it will.”

Westbrook Police officers and investigators from the Maine State Police were at the house at 210 Central St. for most of the afternoon on Friday.

Police declined to release the names and ages of the victims on Friday afternoon because they hadn’t yet notified the families of the two people who died. Police also declined to comment when asked if the victims were related or whether they lived at the home together.

“We are looking into the relationship,” McDonough said.

McCarthy said police received a call at about 10:30 Friday morning from a co-worker of the female victim who was concerned because the woman failed to show up for work. “As I understand it, today was her last day at work. They were planning a party, and she didn’t show up,” McCarthy said.

Officers went to the home and observed that there was a car in the driveway. Police believed someone was home, said McCarthy. After attempting to make contact with anyone inside the house, police forced their way inside and found the victims.

The case remains under investigation by the Maine State Police and the Westbrook Police Department.
