Following the relocation of most of its workforce to offices in other communities, Fairpoint New England has put one of their Standish office buildings up for sale.

Long known as the Tompson House, the white antique colonial sits on three and a half acres of land at the intersection of routes 35 and 25 in Standish Center.

The building is an historic treasure in the town, formerly operating as a carriage house where Henry Wadsworth Longfellow reputedly stayed on his journeys between Portland and Baldwin.

According to Jennifer Sharpe, Fairpoint’s manager of marketing communications, the building has actually been for sale quite awhile. But when a private sale eventually fell through, the company decided to list the building with Broker Mark Floor of Covenant Realty.

In a phone interview on Tuesday, Floor said his company has had the listing for about a week, adding that he is already “talking to a couple of potential buyers.”

According to Floor, the Tompson House, located in the midst of the village district, is the largest office building in the town of Standish. With a working fireplace in almost every room and many other original features, Floor says this renovated structure has potential for up to three commercial or residential tenants.

Fairpoint has also begun clean-up on another former office building, located directly across the street from the Tompson House. This building has been unoccupied since suffering about $300,000 worth of damage in a fire last May.

After that fire, the 22 Fairpoint employees who worked there were relocated to other offices.

Once the enormous red Dumpster in the driveway has been hauled away and clean-up on the building is complete, Fairpoint intends to put that office building on the market as well.

Although the fire may have changed the timing of Fairpoint’s plans slightly, Sharpe insists, “not much has changed” in the telecommunication company’s long-term plan. She said that their Standish office space they call the Pike House and a second office in the center of Standish will remain open.

And according to Pamela Joy, Fairpoint’s director of market development, currently, Fairpoint New England has 11 employees based in Standish.
