Football
Coach: Eric Klein
Record: 2-6
Seniors: Andy McNaughton, Matt Wahrer, Robert Wohltjen, Billy McHugh, Ben Reichl, James Mina, Chas Summers and Tucker Gorman
The Red Storm had the difficult task of playing three of western Maine’s top five teams – Gorham, Massabesic and Noble – to start the season. After that, Scarborough held their own, winning two and losing by a point at Thornton and in the fourth quarter against Kennebunk.
“Although we did not match up physically against any of our opponents, the players were competitive in every game and never quit,” said Klein. “(Despite) many difficult losses, the players responded to adversity every week and turned it up a notch every single day.”
The highlight of the season was undoubtedly Scarborough’s 14-7 win against Biddeford at Waterhouse Field in a driving mid-October rain. McNaughton scored with 2:35 left in the game after a Wohltjen fumble recovery.
“I am very proud of the players for working so hard and coming to practice ready to improve,” said Klein, “and it was a pleasure to work with them and teach the game of football.”
Field Hockey
Coach: Kerry Mariello
Record: 10-6, lost in regional quarterfinals
Seniors: Jessica Baker, Jessica Bolton, Jess Schoppee, Alli Durocher, Danielle Wood and Brianne Lorom
Scarborough compiled its best field hockey record ever, with 10 wins. Three other games were lost by just a goal.
The girls beat Deering, 1-0, in the first round of the playoffs when Schoppee scored in overtime. Gorham eliminated the Red Storm, 4-1, in the regional quarterfinals.
“This was a very special year,” said Mariello, “not because we surpassed last year’s results, but because we learned so much about team. We had no superstars this year.”
Baker was chosen as the Most Valuable Offensive Player and Annmarie Blodgett as Most Valuable Defensive Player. Also receiving team awards were Lorom (Coach’s Award), Schoppee (Clutch Player), Danielle Wood (Most Dedicated), Bolton (Team Leadership), Alli Durocher (Team Spirit), Abbey Palmer (Most Improved) and Sarah Bonenfant (Rookie of the Year).
“This group of seniors was my first as a coach here and they have improved this program 100%,” Mariello said. “We are now taken much more seriously by opposing teams and have the potential to keep moving up the ladder within the league.”
Boys Soccer
Coach: Mark Diaz
Record: 16-1-1, Class A state champions
Seniors: Chad Decker, Mike Keenan, Taylor Sabo, Derek Poulin, Chris Tyson, Tyler Carr, Dana Bennett, Brian Van Dam, Brian Mills, Pierre Soubrier and Kevin Penley
Mt. Ararat topped the Red Storm on penalty kicks in the state final two years ago and Scarborough repaid the favor this year, winning the Gold Ball, 1-0, again on penalty kicks.
The victory was the exclamation point on an impressive season for the team. After dropping their second game to Gorham, the Red Storm won 15 of their next 16 – a tie with Cheverus the only stumble along the way.
“The kids gave me everything I asked for,” said Diaz. “They deserve what they got.”
Poulin gave up just six goals all season, and only one in the team’s last 12 games. In four playoff games, Scarborough allowed no goals in 380 minutes of play. Both the western final and state championship went through two overtimes and more than one round of penalty kicks before the Red Storm emerged victorious.
Soubrier, an exchange student from France, was a force in the middle of the field, and Sabo, Bennett, Eddie Jones, Jason Philbrook and Brent Mayo provided the offense.
Jones, Sabo and Soubrier were selected as SMAA first team all-stars, while Mayo was chosen for the second team and Bennett, Keenan and Poulin received honorable mentions. Decker was presented with the Coach’s Award.
Girls Soccer
Coach: Mike Farley
Record: 13-2
Seniors: Jaymie Coulston, Christina Cange, Lauren Hagerman, Liz Houle, Brittany White and Bri Jordan
The Red Storm entered the playoffs having won eight games in a row, a streak that included five shutouts. They were seeded first in the west and expected to go deep into the post-season, if not all the way.
Though the 2-1 loss in the regional quarterfinals to Cape Elizabeth was a heartbreaker, the squad had an outstanding season, including giving eventual state champ Gorham their only loss, 2-1, in early September.
Houle and Jordan led the team’s potent offensive attack, and both were named as SMAA first-team all-stars. Backs Hagerman and Libby Brackett were chosen as second team all-stars, while goalkeeper Coulston and forward Nikki Desjardins received honorable mentions.
Boys Cross Country
Coach: Jim Harmon
Record: 14-1, Class A state champions
Seniors: Chris Harmon and Tyler Nelson
These guys left people in the dust all season on their way to a second straight state title.
At the regional meet the Red Storm had five runners in the top 12 of the 104-man field, including Travis Griffin (3rd), Harmon (4th) and Talbot (5th). The next closest squad, Portland, was 35 points back.
At the state meet, the same opponent was 33 points behind, as Griffin (2nd), Talbot (5th), Harmon (7th) and Brecht Moulin (10th) led another impressive showing.
“We had a great season thanks to 20 weeks of hard work from our runners,” said Coach Harmon, “and 20 weeks of exceptional support from our runners’ parents.”
Griffin was named the team’s MVP, while Harmon received the Coach’s Award. Nelson received the Senior Award, Talbot the Junior Award, Ben Violette the Sophomore Award and Craig Robinson the Freshman Award.
Girls Cross Country
Coach: Ron Kelly
Record: 14-1
Seniors: Amber Bond, Becky Sither, Brandy Albahary, Seana Bamford and Meagan Baird
The Red Storm had an excellent season, but this is a team to watch in the future. The top two runners, Erica Jesseman and Kaitlynn Saldanha, are both juniors, and behind them is an impressive group of younger athletes.
This season the Scarborough girls won the SMAA Relays, the Lake Region Invitational and the Catholic Memorial Invitational in Boston, while finishing fourth in both the western regional and state meets.
“Improvement throughout the season was noticeable,” said Kelly, “(though) an injury and sickness kept a few runners from reaching their potential.”
Jesseman, who finished fourth in the regionals and sixth at states, was named all-state as well as an SMAA first-team all-star. Saldanha was selected to the SMAA second team. Seana Bamford was an all-academic selection, and Whitney Chamberlain received the Coach’s Award.
“This is a highly motivated group,” Kelly said, “and they’re already looking forward to next year.”
Golf
Coach: Mike Murphy
Record: 7-3
Seniors: Josh Flynn, Chuck Norton, Jared Lanewski and Mark Beidleman
Though the Red Storm golfers didn’t attain one of their goals – for the team to qualify for the states – they put together a nice season.
Scarborough tied eventual state champ Cheverus in medal play in their first meeting and beat the Stags by five strokes in the second match. They also beat Portland, Westbrook and South Portland twice, as well as Deering once.
“We had a fine season,” said Murphy. “The kids played hard – respected their opponent and respected the game. Overall it was a success.”
Volleyball
Coach: Jody King
Record: 3-12
Seniors: Ashley Bayley, Steph Stoddard, and Kim Stoddard
Scarborough fielded a young volleyball team and struggled a bit. Still, they were able to win three matches, two of which went to five games, giving the girls experience under pressure.
In two meetings with state champ Greely, the Red Storm were no pushover, tallying 31 and 37 points. The squad qualified for the state tournament, but fell to Cony in the first round.
Amy Crawford was named MVP, while Amanda Bilodeau was chosen Most Improved and Ashley Bayley received the Coach’s Award.
“I think we’ll be much improved next year, and I look forward to working with the group again,” said King, adding that most of the girls will play in a winter league to improve their skills.
