Scarborough’s Daniel Ornstein followed up his victory at the state Junior Olympic Cross Country meet with another win, this time in the JO Northeast Regional race, held at Bryant University in Smithfield, Rhode Island Nov. 20

His time of 12:03 in the Bantam boys 3K race was more than 12 seconds faster than second-place finisher Ian Parnell and earned Daniel a prime spot in the Junior Olympic National Cross Country Meet, scheduled for Dec. 10, also at Bryant University in Smithfield.

He’ll be joined by more than 3,000 athletes expected at the USATF Junior Olympic National meet, all advancing after finishing in the top twenty at 15 regional meets across the country.

Not far behind Daniel in the Regional Bantam race, and also going to the National event, is teammate Wout Moulin, also of Scarborough, who finished ninth in a time of 12:48.85.

The Bantam division, one of five JO divisions, includes runners born since 1995.

Ornstein, 10, will be running on a different course – last year’s was held in Shaumburg, Illinois – but his time would have put him in the top 65 runners in the country in his age group in last year’s national field. In this year’s race, Daniel will have the added advantage of having run the course in the regional meet.
