George L. Higgins III of Cape Elizabeth and Peaks Island has been named vice president for medical affairs and chief medical officer at Maine Medical Center.
He has spent nearly a year as the hospitali?¿1?2s interim vice president for medical affairs.
i?¿1?2Higgins (was) the clear choice to join MMC’s senior management team,” said Vince Conti, the hospitali?¿1?2s president and CEO. Conti also lives in Cape Elizabeth.
Higgins has been a member of the medical staff at Maine Med since 1977. He became chief of the department of emergency medicine in 1986 and held that post until 2002, when he became the associate vice president for performance improvement.
Higgins, a graduate of Colby College, served his residency at Maine Med in 1973, following his graduation from Tufts University School of Medicine.
He is also president of the Friends of Casco Bay and is on the board of the Piper Shores retirement community.
