Westbrook School Superintendent Stan Sawyer will present his proposed 2006-2007 school budget to the School Committee at a meeting on March 22.

The proposed school budget will keep the school system’s expenditure growth for the coming fiscal year to 4 percent over last year. The small percentage would keep Westbrook’s increase below those of neighboring communities.

“If the school committee in its review takes the suggestions of the Finance Committee, our gross budget would be within the guidelines requested by Mayor Bruce Chuluda,” said Sawyer. “I think Westbrook’s 4 percent is coming in less than any other area school districts that I know of.”

At a joint meeting in February between the School Committee and the City Council, City Administrator Jerry Bryant explained that the year before they had a lot of discussion about how much money the school system would get from the state while deciding on a budget.

This year, Bryant said, the administration wanted to set a limit on expenditures and then work with whatever the state ended up providing later. The budget being presented to the School Committee is the result of that effort.

Sawyer will present his budget to the School Committee at its meeting tonight (March 22) at 7 p.m. in room 114 of Westbrook High School.
