Naples Counseling is pleased to announce that psychotherapist Bonnie I. Handy, a licensed clinical social worker, licensed alcohol and drug counselor, and diplomate in clinical social work, is also now trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), a treatment especially for trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder. It can also be used for a variety of other problems, such as depression, anxiety, phobias, and more.

For many people, it is a quick and effective therapy. It has been extensively researched, endorsed by the World Health Organization, and used by the government to treat American veterans.

EMDR was initially developed in 1987 by Francine Shapiro, PhD, Senior Research Fellow at the Mental Research Institute in Palo Alto, California. EMDR uses principles of neurobiology and left/right brain stimulation, using simple headphones and hand-held clickers, to resolve painful memories, beliefs, and other issues.
