As Windham and Gorham continue to grow, the demands on local wastewater systems intensify. The Little Falls Wastewater Treatment Facility is nearing its maximum capacity and cannot accommodate continued development. It was built in the mid-1980s and treats an average of 30,000 gallons of wastewater per day.
To address the wastewater needs of the Little Falls area, Gorham, Windham, and the Portland Water District are proposing to treat wastewater at the District’s wastewater treatment facility in Westbrook. This project entails constructing approximately 25,000 feet of pipe mostly along Route 237 to transport wastewater from the Little Falls area to the Westbrook facility. The cost of the project is estimated at $5 to $6 million and has the added benefit of reducing the environmental impacts of the existing wastewater discharges into the Presumpscot River.
