As of Thursday afternoon, State Police divers and the Maine Marine Patrol were still searching for a lobsterman whose boat flipped in the waters off McKenney Point in Cape Elizabeth.
A fishing boat, a kayaker and a lobster boat capsized in rough seas caused by tropical storm Florence passing off the coast of Maine on Wednesday. Four of the boaters have been rescued, but the captain and owner of the lobster boat, Steve Smith, is still missing, said Mike Jordan, Cape Elizabeth deputy fire chief.
A roofer working on a house on the McKenney Point Road reported the capsized lobster boat, said Sgt. Paul Joyce of the Maine Marine Patrol. Cape Elizabeth dispatch received the call at 11:25 a.m., according to dispatcher Greg Tinsman.
Tinsman said at 11:27 a.m. the first unit arrived on the scene and assisted with the rescue of two 22-year-old males from Hollis who were on the lobster boat, Alice Lee. The males were transported to Maine Medical Center.
The Cape Elizabeth WETeam, police department, and fire department along with assistance from South Portland Fire, Scarborough Fire, the Maine Marine Patrol, the U.S. Coast Guard and the Maine Warden Service are searching the coast and shoreline for the third crewmember of the Alice Lee, according to Joyce.
Joyce said search and rescue efforts continued until about midnight and started again on Thursday at about 6 a.m.
Through interviews and by checking the lobster traps with fresh bait, the rescue teams have a rough position of the Alice Lee before it capsized. Divers have been combing the area, but have had to fight heavy currents, poor visibility and a steep, rocky terrain, said Joyce.
The fisherman, Kurt Brown, capsized at 8:10 a.m. and was soon rescued and transported to Maine Medical Center. The kayaker who flipped at 10:08 a.m. was rescued, checked and released at the scene, according to Cape Elizabeth dispatch reports.
Swells were ranging from 8 to 9 feet on Wednesday, said Art Lester, meteorological technician with the National Weather Service in Grey. A small craft advisory for the area has been in affect since Sunday.
