The South Portland police officer that was wounded in a shooting Wednesday night has been released from the hospital.

Officer Steven Connors was shot four times on Oct. 11, once in the right side of his head, his right shoulder, his left torso and his left hand, said South Portland Police Chief Edward Googins.

The suspect, Terrel Dubois, 22, suffered multiple gunshot wounds during the incident and is in critical but stable condition at Maine Medical Center, said Googins.

Connors was released from the hospital on Oct. 12, said South Portland Police Lt. Frank Clark. Clark said South Portland police were grateful for the outpouring of support for Connors from both police and the public.

Despite early reports that the suspect had died of his wounds, Googins said at a press conference on Oct. 12, that no one had been killed.

Shortly after 7 p.m., officers from South Portland and Portland went to an apartment at 204 Elm St. to serve multiple arrest warrants from Portland to Dubois. Googins said on Thursday that the Portland police and South Portland police had been searching for Dubois for the last couple weeks, and the Elm Street address was just one of several leads they were investigating.

Dubois was wanted on charges of kidnapping, two counts of criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon, terrorizing and violation of conditions of release from May 2006, said Portland Police Chief Tim Burton on Oct. 12. Burton said Dubois had a previous history of assault.

Googins said that when officers arrived at the residence, there was a heavy exchange of gunfire, but police were not releasing details of the event. Googins said Connors’ hand injury was the most serious. The bullet had stayed lodged in his hand, police said that before he was released from the hospital, Connors underwent surgery.

During a search of the residence early Thursday morning, police found a small caliber handgun police believed to have been used by the suspect during the shooting along with other evidence, said Googins.

A second search was performed later on Thursday after police observed objects in plain view that were beyond the scope of the original search, said Googins.

There are ongoing investigations into Dubois and others, said Googins. He said police are working with the Cumberland County District Attorney’s Office to determine what the charges against Dubois will be.

As of Thursday, Dubois remains under police guard at the Maine Medical Center for the original arrest warrants from Portland police that were served Wednesday night.

Googins said on Thursday that it was the first shooting of a police officer in South Portland that he remembers in the 12 years with the department, and the first use of deadly force used since 1994.
