Rep. Meredith Strang Burgess, R-Cumberland, is on a mission to get a special pink license plate approved by the Legislature to raise money to fight breast cancer.
Burgess was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1999 and that bad news turned her into an activist. Recently she stood with a group of legislators from both parties to launch a drive to collect 2,000 reservations for the new plate, as is required for any new specialty plate before it is approved by the state.
The money raised by the pink plate, which will cost $20, would go to the Maine Breast Cancer Coalition-Support Service Fund; the Maine Cancer Foundation-Women’s Cancer Research Fund; and the Maine Breast and Cervical Health Program-Mammogram Fund.
