Augusta 7

Westbrook 2

The Westbrook 14 year-olds suffered a slight hiccup in the Babe Ruth state tournament on Friday when they fell to Augusta, 7-2. Westbrook jumped out to an early lead, but Augusta roared back with a pair of three-run innings to come from behind.

The boys from Westbrook got on the board first with a run in the second inning. Sean Murphy led off the inning and was hit by a pitch. Tom Lemay then walked and Westbrook was threatening. A wild pitch moved both Murphy and Lemay into scoring position. After a miscue on the bases and a fly out, there were two away and Westbrook was in danger of squandering the opportunity. But Mike Mowatt reached on a fielder’s choice that plated the first run of the game.

Westbrook still clung to their 1-0 lead when Augusta came to bat in the top of the fourth. Luke Dunklee started things off with a single. Two batters later Spencer Allen singled. John Hall then doubled to drive in the tying and go-ahead runs. Mike Phelps reached on an error and another run scored.

In the fifth, Augusta tallied three more runs. Ryan Leach started the rally with a one-out double. Dunklee then walked. The runners moved over on a wild pitch and Corey Lapierre walked to load the bases. Allen singled in a run and it was a 4-1 Augusta lead. Hall then singled in a pair to make it 6-1.

Westbrook got one run back in the sixth when Jame Gardiner led off the inning by getting hit with a pitch. A single by Murphy and another hit batsmen put Gardiner at third. Trevor Clouarte reached on a fielder’s choice to score Gardiner. That was as close as Westbrook would get as Augusta then added another run in the seventh.
