The Eagles have started out this season 0-2, with losses to Deering and Bonny Eagle. Windham will look to straighten out their season with upcoming games against winless Portland (Sept. 14), South Portland (Sept. 21) and Kennebunk (Sept. 28). The Eagles will face a tough test on Oct. 2 when powerhouse Gorham comes to town.

Cross Country

Coach : Jeff Riddle (8th year)

Asst. Coach: Heather Kahill (1st year)

How did last year end: “Last year ended with the future of Windham Cross Country in mind,” said Riddle. “We had a lot of injuries at the end of the season and our numbers were low, but that has all changed as the program grows. This season we have a huge team, this compared to the last five years at WHS. We have 16 girls, a lot of new runners, and 12 guys.”

Runners to watch:

Girls: Kayla Phinney, a junior this year, will be hungry to outperform her personal bests. She is overcoming injuries from her freshman year and is very driven to be on the first team at regionals. Her freshman teammates Emma Krieg and Erin Flatley are right on her heals.

Boys: Austin Loukas and Shawn Pennels are our top runners for the boys. They have both matured as runners and realize what it takes to improve. Both of these athletes have turned themselves into competitive runners, they deserve any success that comes their way as they have earned it.

Coach’s outlook: I am extremely excited about this season and the years to come, as we have great numbers and more importantly we have a team made up of incredible kids.

We have a lot of new and young runners that are on individual plans to mature into competitive runners.

They are a family, a supportive team, which is what it takes to get through a season of cross country. We have a lot of new runners, so there is a lot of coaching, cross training, and motivational talks taking place. We will be competitive as a team for the first time in years, both the boys and the girls. All of our runners are improving while they stay patient with what their bodies and minds will let them achieve. We are also really excited to unveil the newest addition to our cross country trail that we have been building all summer long; seven bridges, lots of fill, telephone poles, and sweat equity.

Field Hockey

Coach: Cory Merrill (5th season)

Last year’s record: 7-7-last year ended well with a 1-0 loss in the quarterfinals against Gorham. The team played hard all season and it paid off.

Players to watch this year: “The team is young but full of talent. All of the players should be watched, but two of our standouts are Christina Maiorino, a junior center-forward and Kelsey Babb, a senior center midfielder” said Merrill. “Both have been on varsity since their sophomore year and have always been aggressive and hard to beat to the ball.”

Coach’s Outlook: “I think if the girls can learn to put it together as a team we should do quite well. There is a big mixture of first team, JV, and varsity players, so they are not used to working together. Once they begin to trust each other and beat their opponents to the ball on a consistent basis, I see us making it to playoffs again.”

Golf

Coach: Roger Young (3rd year)

Last year’s record: 0-10

Players to watch: Sam LeBlanc (senior) and Richard Getchell (junior)

Coach’s outlook: “We hope to win a couple of matches and in general, shoot better scores as a team.”

Boys Soccer

Coach: Jim O’Connor (10th year)

Last year’s record: 6-6-2-defeated Portland in first playoff game

Players to watch: Josh Young, Eric Walton

Coach’s outlook: “We are a young team looking to improve throughout the year.”

Girls’ Soccer

Coach: Wally LeBlanc (3rd year)

Last year’s record: 8-3-3-lost 1-0 in semifinals to Scarborough

Players to watch: Nicole Ross; Captains Jess Taylor, Ashlee Daggett and Audrey Quigley

Coach’s outlook:”The offensive combination of Jess Taylor, Audrey Quigley, and Sami Levine are very creative and attack well as a group,” said LeBlanc. “They will put great pressure on our opponents. The midfield and defense had to fill some holes due to graduation last year, but really played well during this past preseason, they are anchored by Captain Ashlee Daggett. Fiona Mills has filled the role of stopper back quite well. Freshman Keisha Williams has been very consistent in the keeper position, which has been a big question mark for the team this year. They girls should be a playoff team again this year if they work to their potential.”
