Westbrook 6

Cheverus 28

The Westbrook Blue Blazes (1-2) kept the game with Cheverus (1-2) close for three quarters, but they weren’t able to break through at the end, falling to the Stags 28-6.

The two teams played a scoreless first quarter, with the game’s first score coming on a 23-yard touchdown pass from Cheverus quarterback Vinny Ciampi to Ian Schwartz.

The Blazes answered back with a touchdown of their own on the very next drive as quarterback Brian Doyle found Corey Luce for a 21-yard touchdown, the extra point failed, and Westbrook found itself down 7-6.

It stayed that way until close to the end of the half when Ciampi hooked up with Keelan Donovan for a nine-yard touchdown. A failed extra point attempt left the score 13-6 in favor of Cheverus at the break.

The teams played a scoreless third quarter, and despite Westbrook’s furious efforts to mount a comeback, Cheverus put the game away with 15 fourth quarter points.

First, Ciampi found Donovan for a second touchdown pass, this time from six yards out. Then Ciampi hit Kirk Mullen with a 17-yard touchdown pass to close out the scoring.

This week, Westbrook will take on Bonny Eagle at home on Sept. 20 in a special Thursday game at 7 p.m.
