Girl Scout sign-up Tuesday

Parents and girls are invited to learn about and register for Girl Scouts on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Gorham Middle School Cafeteria

Girl Scouts of Maine serves more than 14,000 girls ages 5 to 17 statewide. Many volunteer options for adults are also available, including troop leaders. Registration fee is $10, payable by check, and financial assistance is available for this fee.

Meeting postponed

The January meeting of Gorham Historical Society on Monday was canceled because of the snowstorm. President Jan Labrecque said the program entitled “Antique Road Show” has been rescheduled for March. The society meets the second Monday at 7 p.m.

Busy legislators

Sen. Philip Bartlett II, D-Cumberland County, was among the dignitaries at the recent ribbon-cutting ceremonies for Ruth’s Reusable Resources new home at 39 Blueberry Road, Portland.

Ruth’s Reusable Resources, an organization that takes donations of surplus equipment and supplies from businesses and provides them to qualifying schools and nonprofits, was forced to relocate when its former home was slated to be converted into senior housing. Unum offered Ruth’s space at a reduced price, and the Department of Education provided a $235,000 grant to help the organization make the purchase. Bartlett helped to secure grant.

Rep. Chris Barstow, D-Gorham, joined more than 30 elected officials from across the country in Florham Park, N.J., Dec. 7-9 for a policy forum on economic development. The weekend retreat included sessions led by policy experts on workforce development, progressive tax incentive strategies, and sessions on how to promote economic growth through arts and culture.

Barstow is House chairman of the State & Local Government Committee.

U.S. taxpayer debt

The Bureau of Public Debt reported on Jan. 11 that the U.S. Public debt was $9,198,230,732,277.62.
