An Old Orchard Beach resident has won the $3,000 top prize in a contest sponsored by Clynk, a Scarborough-based recycling and redemption program.

Sandy Orodeckis received her check Monday at Clynk’s flagship station at the Scarborough Hannaford supermarket.

The prize was the culmination of a Magic Bag contest to celebrate the addition of Clynk’s 11th store in southern Maine. Some 40,000 Clynk customers from towns spanning from York to Brunswick participated.

Four customer names were drawn, one per week for a month, to receive a $100 Hannaford grocery cart. Orodeckis was one of the lucky final four.

She said she averages dropping off two Clynk bags a month.

“I’ll probably take my husband on vacation for a couple of days,” Orodeckis said. “He drinks a lot of the soda that contributes to our Clynk account.”

Orodeckis said she would also share some of the money with her grandchildren, and save the rest for gas and oil expenses.

Clynk partnered with Hannaford in March of 2006 and now has locations in York, Westbrook, South Portland, Scarborough, Sanford, Saco, Windham, Falmouth, Buxton, Brunswick and Biddeford. Clynk plans to open an additional 12 stores in Maine before the end of the year.

Clynk participants sign up for free, but pay 20 cents for each recycling bag to store returnables. Participants are given an online bank account when they sign up, which acts like an ATM account that receives deposits every time the customer makes a redemption. Clynk customers can use their Clynk card for any purchase.
