The Westbrook Planning Board will get its first look at a sketch plan from Pike Industries for an asphalt plant on Spring Street – a proposal that originally irked Idexx Labratories, which had plans to build its headquarters on a neighboring site.
The two companies and the city have met over the past few months in an attempt to come up with a compromise that would allow both Pike and Idexx to expand. On Tuesday, Pike will get the opportunity to show the city what it’s come up with so far.
The conflicting expansion plans between the two companies were publicly vetted at a Committee of the Whole meeting in March, when Mayor Bruce Chuluda proposed to rezone Five Star Industrial Park, Westbrook Heights Business Park and the adjacent properties between Saco and Spring streets from industrial to light manufacturing, which would have prevented Pike from being able to follow through with its plans.
Idexx officials said a move toward light manufacturing was what the city presented as its vision in negotiations over keeping Idexx’s multi-million-dollar expansion in Westbrook.
However, both citizens and councilors questioned the fairness of rezoning land owned by Pike to allow for the Idexx expansion.
The proposal was tabled by the committee, which asked the companies and the city to try to reach a compromise.
Pike will present its sketch plan to the Planning Board at a meeting Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Room 114 at Westbrook High School.
