Motorists, including taxi drivers, in Maine will soon be paying more state fuel tax at the pumps.

The state road tax on gasoline is set to rise on July 1 to 28.4 cents per gallon from the present 27.6 cents, according to the Maine Revenue Service Web site. The state’s gas tax is on top of the federal fuel tax of 18.4 cents per gallon.

The combined state and federal fuel tax on a gallon of gas in Maine is now 46 cents.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration Web site, here’s what U.S. drivers paid for in a gallon gas:

In April 2008

Retail price $3.46

Refining percentage 10%

Distribution, marketing percentage 5.8%

Taxes 11.5 %

Crude oil 72.7%

Those figures compare with these for April of 2007:

Retail price $2.84
