Standish residents will consider a capital expenditures bond for more than $1.2 million, during the annual town meeting Saturday June 14.

The town meeting will be held at the Standish Municipal Building on Route 35, starting at 9 a.m.

The bond is one part of more than $7.1 million in town spending presented to residents this Saturday.

John Sargent, chairman of the Budget Committee, said the proposed $500,000 addition to the Standish Municipal Building is likely to bring the most discussion because it is a large expense and is grouped with eight other items in the proposed bond. The 5,000 square foot expansion would include office and storage space, as well as a place for voting, a multi-function room and a training room for joint meetings.

Though the majority on the Budget Committee and the Town Council voted to accept the addition, Sargent said, there was a difference of opinion about how it should be presented to town residents. The Budget Committee recommended breaking down each item in the bond so that voters could consider the expansion separately from the other items, which include $180,000 for an ambulance and $145,000 for road rehabilitation and upgrades. The bond was presented for a vote in Tuesday’s election.

“I really wanted to vote for an ambulance, but I did not want to vote for everything lumped together,” said Budget Committee member John Keith, adding that he voted against the bond in the election. The bond passed on Tuesday, 641-584, but will come before residents a second time during Saturday’s town meeting. The town charter states that any proposed capital expenditure over $75,000 must come before the town for a referendum vote.

The biggest increases in the town budget are in salaries, medical insurance for employees, fuel costs and highway maintenance, Sargent said, adding that the town share of the tax rate would stay fairly flat.

“We’re getting whacked big time on the school,” Sargent said, pointing to a large increase in the school budget from $7.5 million to $8.2 million, which raises the school share of taxes in Standish from $7.28 to $7.47 per $1,000 of valued property.
