Season outlook: The Capers are looking to take the next step and avenge their loss to Mountain Valley in the Class B title game last season. Filieo knows that Cape will have a target on their backs this year.

“Cape looks to continue to compete at a high level in the Campbell conference,” Filieo said. “With every team in the league slightly better than last year – the season should present more of a challenge than 2007.”

Sport: Girls soccer

Coach: Gary Newell-1st year

2008 season (as of Sept. 8): 1-0, beat York 2-0 on Sept. 6.

Key games this season: “All of them,” Newell said. “Cape plays a tough schedule against quality opponents each and every game.”

Season outlook: “Once we step onto the pitch we will be ready to play,” said Newell. “We are strong mentally and physically and we understand that nothing is going to be given to us, with the tough schedule, there cannot be off days. Skill and depth will serve us well this season. We will be ready for each and every challenge.”

Sport: Field Hockey

Coach: Darci Holland

Last year’s record: 6-6-1

Key games this season: York and Greely will again be tough games for the Capers.

Season outlook: “We have a great group of girls this year, with 10 seniors; six of them being returning varsity players,” Holland said. “We also have some underclassmen that will be strong players for us; it’s a matter of getting their confidence level where it needs to be, which will come with more game play. Defensively we will be strong as long as we can stay healthy, we just have to be aggressive and put the ball in the net.”

School/Sport: Boys Cross Country

Coach: David Weatherbie

Last year’s record: 12-3-Western Maine regional champions

2008 season: On Sept. 5, the Capers placed third at a meet with Falmouth, Greely, Wells and York.

Key meets this season: Meets vs. WMC Conference rivals: Greely, Falmouth and York

Season outlook: The Capers look to have a strong, experienced team this year. “The team returns six of our top seven and nine of our top 10 from last year’s Western Maine regional championship team,” Weatherbie said. “The experience gained from last year’s championship season by Douty, Brigham, Yokobaskas and Thomas should compliment our strong up-front duo of Rand and Flathers. We will get a good look at Greely, Falmouth and York on Sept. 5 and that will give us a fairly good indication of how we stack up. We fully expect our great rivalry with Greely to continue. Our ultimate goal is to win the state championship, and I’m sure its the same for Greely. It will come down to which team progresses more over the season and executes their race plan best on Nov. 1.

School/Sport: Girls Cross-Country

Coach: Mary Ann Doss

Last year’s record: Undefeated in regular season, Western Maine Conference Champions, Class B Regional Champions, Class B State Champions, 8th place at the New England Championships.

2008 season: On Sept. 5, the Capers won their first meet of the season, defeating Falmouth, Greely, Wells and York.

Key players: Marita Stressenger, Emily Attwood, Rachel Nichols, Hannah Doss, Kelsey Barton, Caitlin Pomeroy, Paige Kozlowski, Catherine Tierney.

Key games this season: Western Maine Conference championships, regional championship meet, state championship meet.

Season outlook: “This is the best team ever to compete for Cape Elizabeth,” Doss said. “If everyone stays healthy, the team should have an incredible amount of success. Once again, our goal is to win the state championship.”

Sport: Golf

Key matches this season: York (Sept. 19)

Season outlook: The Capers think they are in good shape to defend last year’s state crown. “We have a good mixture of returning veterans and young talent coming into their own,” said McGary.

Sport: Volleyball

Coaches: Rob Thompson and assistant coach Mary-Ellen Towne

Last year’s record: This is the first year for volleyball in Cape. “We were a club sport without varsity status, as such we played only eight matches and won only one match against North Yarmouth Academy,” said Thompson.

Key players: Seniors Alyssa Hilse (setter), Steph Lawsure (outside hitter), Emily Richardson (outside hitter), Molly Powell (outside hitter), Naomi Odlin (middle hitter) and Shelby Downer (libero)

Key games this season: “The season opener against Kennebunk (Sept. 12) will really set the tone for the rest of the season, also Falmouth (Oct. 4) as they are also a new team on the block,” said Thompson

Season outlook: “We are looking to increase our knowledge of the game and focus on the basics in order to stay competitive this season,” Thompson said.

Sport: Boys soccer

Last year’s record: 9-2-3-lost to Greely in Class A quarterfinals

2008 record (as of Sept. 8): 1-0, beat York 4-0 on Sept. 6

Key players: Brock Barrett and Joe Wolanski were the top scorers for the Capers in their first game of the season with a goal and an assist each. Goalie Zack Reed had the shutout in the net.

Key games this season: Greely (Sept. 17 and Oct. 21)

Season outlook: The Capers are off to a good start this season with a shutout win over York. The Capers need to keep up the offense as they play a tough schedule this season. The Capers are surely looking forward to getting some revenge on Greely, who knocked the No. 4-seeded Capers out of the tournament in the quarterfinals last season.
