The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife is hosting a public hearing on Thursday at 6:30 p.m., in the Old Orchard Beach Town Hall, regarding piping plover habitat designation for Old Orchard Beach, Biddeford and Cape Elizabeth.
This proposed increase in designated plover habitat would be a considerable expansion to the existing area on Old Orchard Beach. If approved as proposed, this habitat designation will extend roughly 0.75 miles north of Goosefare Brook and more than a mile south from the Scarborough/Old Orchard Beach town line. Residents and visitors would perhaps see more of the wire enclosures if plovers are nesting in these areas.
The other noticeable aspect of this habitat expansion might be less beach cleaning by public works crews during the nesting season.
