So far this season, the Lake Region girls basketball team has shown that it intends to defend its Class B Western title as the Lakers have had two big wins to start out the season.

After demolishing Sacopee Valley 74-29 at home on Dec. 5, the Lakers traveled to Freeport and beat the Falcons on their home floor 49-39 on Dec. 8.

Lake Region was in control of the game from the outset as they jumped out to a quick first-quarter lead, and with the exception of a 2-2 tie early in the game, led wire-to-wire in the contest.

The Lakers dominated the first half of the game, as they refused to allow Freeport many second chances on offense and point guard Abby Hancock and the rest of the team were able to break through Freeport’s full-court press without much difficulty. The Lakers’ Chelsea Myers had a huge first half, as she scored 15 points and Lake Region went into the half with a 28-17 lead.

The second half was much the same story, as the Lakers were able to hold the Falcons at bay. Junior forward Morgan McLean came up big in the second half for the Lakers, scoring eight of her 11 points. Hancock finished the game with seven points, Meghan Craffey finished with seven and Devin Fitzgerald and Shannon VanLoan each chipped in with two points.

After a game at Gray-New Gloucester on Dec. 11 (played after the Lakes Region Weekly’s deadline), the Lakers return home on Dec. 16 to take on Poland in a 5:30 p.m. game and will host Yarmouth on Dec. 18 at 7 p.m.
