SOUTH PORTLAND — Police issued a warning to residents Tuesday about a phone scam reportedly aimed at stealing credit card and personal information.
Police said several residents have reported receiving calls from a “506” number, which is New Brunswick, Canada. The caller allegedly identifies him- or herself as being from “your credit card card company.”
The caller then suggests a grace period for a rate reduction is due to expire and encourages residents to dial “1” for more information. That extension asks for a credit card number and other personal information.
Police encouraged residents who receive calls of this nature to ask many clarifying questions to determine if the call is legitimate.
