PORTLAND — Margaret Elizabeth Sanford, 91, died Jan. 29 at The Cedars Nursing Home in Portland.
She was born in Bangor on Dec. 5, 1917, to Rufus and Grace (Norwood) Sanford.
After graduating from Bangor High School in 1935, she joined the Women’s Army Corps. She served in Europe during the London Blitz of World War II. She was also active with the European Theater in Paris.
When she returned from military service, she attended Bryant Stratton Business School in Boston. She worked for the Emma Willard School for Girls in Troy, N.Y., and later worked as a secretary at Corenco Rendering in Lowell, Mass. until her retirement.
She spent time after her retirement volunteering at Malden Hospital and the Universalist Church of Malden, Mass.
In 1999, she moved to Maine to be closer to family and enjoyed living at the Cape Elizabeth Home in South Portland.
She is survived by cousins, David and Gloria (Dodge) Page of Portland, Cynthia Hughes, Robert and Elaine (Maynard) Page of South Portland, Jon and Connie (Page) Stuart of Carmel, and Donald and Donna (Woodward) Page of Herman.
There are no immediate funeral services. She will be interred at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Bangor this spring.
Arrangements are by Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland.
