Dragons boys capture KVAC track crown; Locals shine at wrestling states
Last weekend was a busy one for local track and field, swimming and diving and wrestling standouts.
At the Class A state wrestling meet in Augusta, Morse produced one state champion and finished sixth as a team. Mt. Ararat tied for 13th.
At the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference track and field championships, Brunswick’s boys came in first. Mt. Ararat was fourth. In the girls’ meet, the Dragons were second to Edward Little, while the Eagles placed third.
The KVAC swimming and diving title meet was also held and Morse’s girls placed first. Mt. Ararat was fifth and Brunswick placed seventh. In the boys’ meet, the Dragons edged Lewiston for first, while the Shipbuilders came in third and the Eagles were fourth.

SUBHEAD-Wrestling
The Class A wrestling title was won this year by Noble, which dethroned Massabesic 170.5-155. Morse had 49 points, while Mt. Ararat tied Gardiner and Nokomis with 23.
Locally, Morse’s Tyler Russell stole the show, winning the state crown in the 171-pound weight class with a 6-5 decision over Bonny Eagle’s Stephen Martin. Teammate D.J. Brackett reached the finals in the 112-pound class, but was pinned by Marshwood’s Jake Rasque at 5 minutes, 52 seconds.
In the consolation round, Morse’s Spencer Chipman beat Massabesic’s Derek Cloutier in the 160-pound final, 6-4. Mt. Ararat’s Zach Chandler beat Noble’s Nate Winsor 13-0 in the final at 171-pounds.
SUBHEAD-Track
At the KVAC track meet, Brunswick won the boys’ competition by scoring 218.5 points, easily outdistancing second place Edward Little (126.5). Mt. Ararat was a distant fourth with 69 points.
Dragons’ standout Matt Hatke and Eagles’ star Tim Bickford both won three events.
In the girls’ meet, Brunswick had 107 points, but was runner-up to Lewiston (136.5). Mt. Ararat was third with 94 points.
Dragons’ star Kristin Slotnick and Eagles’ standout Christina Erving both won two events.
The Class A state championship is Monday beginning at 10 a.m., at the University of Southern Maine in Gorham.
SUBHEAD-Swimming
In the pool, Morse’s girls won the KVAC title last weekend with a score of 288, which was 21 better than Messalonskee. Mt. Ararat had 114 points for fifth and Brunswick was seventh with 94, The Shipbuilders won two of three relays and got a pair of wins from Rebecca Bonnett (the 200 individual medley and the 100 butterfly).
In the boys’ meet, Brunswick had 250 points, seven better than Lewiston. Morse (212) and Mt. Ararat (180) were right behind. The Dragons took the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays. The Shipbuilders won the 400 free relay. Brunswick’s Phillip Jacques won the breaststroke and IM.
The Class A state championship meet for girls is Monday at Bowdoin College. The boys compete Tuesday at Bowdoin.
