SUBHEAD-SMCC hoops teams ready for postseason

The Southern Maine Community College men’s and women’s basketball teams are competing in the Yankee Small College Conference tournament. The Seawolves are looking to win another conference crown and advance to the USCAA National Tournament next month. Women’s coach Becky Roak was named the YSCC Coach of the Year and Sonya O’Tash was selected as a Co-Player of the Year in recent balloting. O’Tash was joined on the All-Conference team by teammates Rachel Del Camp and Darcey Webster. Coleman Findlay from the men’s squad was named All-Conference as well.

SUBHEAD-SPNLL registration
The South Portland National Little League will hold its 2009 registration Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Community Center. The SPNLL organizes T-ball, baseball and softball for boys ages 5 to 16 and girls 5 to 12. First-time participants must have a birth certificate and proof of residency.

SUBHEAD-MCU Comedy night fundraiser upcoming
Maine Coast United and TOPSpurs TOPSoccer Programs, a community-based training and team placement program for young athletes with disabilities, are hosting a Comedy Night fundraiser on March 6 at The Gold Room (next to Portland Sports Complex). Doors open at 7:45 p.m. and the show begins 8:30 p.m. There will also be a silent auction and a 50/50 raffle.

SUBHEAD-USM baseball team hosting clinics
Coach Ed Flaherty and the University of Southern Maine Huskies baseball team will host a pitching, hitting and defense clinic Sundays Feb. 22 and March 1 at the Costello Fieldhouse on the USM Gorham campus. The pitching and defense clinics go from 9 a.m. to 12 p.. Hitting clinics are from 1 to 4 p.m. The cost of each session is $30. The full day is $50. Players ages 8 to 18 are welcome.

SUBHEAD-Lacrosse officials wanted
The Maine Lacrosse Officials Association is holding its annual men’s high school referee training program Feb. 22 and March 1 (with March 8 as a snow day) at North Yarmouth Academy. Officials are needed for boys’ lacrosse for the upcoming season.

SUBHEAD-Scarborough baseball/softball camps upcoming
The 12th annual baseball and softball spring training camp for 8-12 year old boys and girls will begin March 1 and will continue March 8, 15 and 22 from 1 to 3:30 p.m. at Wentworth Gym in Scarborough. Scarborough baseball coach Jim Cronin will direct. Cost is $45 for the four sessions.

SUBHEAD-Six-month running program beginning
Waynflete School cross country coach Ziggy Gillespie is offering a six-month running program for any level of ability. Information and registration will be held Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Peak Performance Multisport on Marginal Way in Portland. The program starts March 4 and meets every Wednesday night at 6 for a group run and workout.
