SMCC teams fall in conference tournament
The Southern Maine Community College men’s and women’s basketball teams saw their quests to repeat as Yankee Small College Conference champions come to an end last week. The men, ranked third, were upset 87-84 by the University of Maine-Augusta in the quarterfinals. Coleman Findlay had 26 points and nine rebounds. Matt Findlay added 16 points, while Josh Tuplin had 11. The women, ranked first, edged UMA 79-75 in the semifinals, but were denied 59-49 by Central Maine CC in the championship game Sunday.
South Portland hot shots advance to states
One boys and two girls were victorious at last weekend’s Maine Recreation and Park Association Southwest Regional Hot Shot Contest. On the boys’ side, Ryan Pelletier won the 13-15 division and Patrick Conley was runner-up. Xander Keiter was second in the 9-10 division. Paige Carter won the girls’ 11-12 division and May Redmond was first in the 13-15 grouping. The state finals are March 7 in Old Town.
MCU Comedy night fundraiser upcoming
Maine Coast United and TOPSpurs TOPSoccer Programs, a community-based training and team placement program for young athletes with disabilities, are hosting a Comedy Night fundraiser on March 6 at The Gold Room (next to Portland Sports Complex). Doors open at 7:45 p.m. and the show begins 8:30 p.m. There will also be a silent auction and a 50/50 raffle.

Scarborough baseball/softball camps upcoming
The 12th annual baseball and softball spring training camp for 8-12 year old boys and girls will begin March 1 and will continue March 8, 15 and 22 from 1 to 3:30 p.m. at Wentworth Gym in Scarborough. Scarborough baseball coach Jim Cronin will direct. Cost is $45 for the four sessions. FMI, 883-4079.
There will also be the ninth annual baseball and softball skills camp for 5-8 year old boys and girls on the same dates and at the same location from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Scarborough softball coach Tom Griffin will direct. The cost for four sessions is $30.

Six-month running program beginning
Waynflete School cross country coach Ziggy Gillespie is offering a six-month running program for any level of ability. Information and registration will be held Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Peak Performance Multisport on Marginal Way in Portland. The program starts March 4 and meets every Wednesday night at 6 for a group run and workout. FMI, 780-8200 or
