PORTLAND — The state Board of Education on March 11 approved nearly $20 million in funding for construction of the Ocean Avenue Elementary School.
The school is planned for the site of the former Baxter Elementary School, which is scheduled for demolition in late June. The new school is expected to be open for the 2011-2012 school year.
The state will fund all but $60,000 of the total construction cost. The School Department added air-conditioning units to the design, to support students in the functional life skills program, who have fragile health issues and attend school year-round.
