Waynflete School recently held its winter sports awards night and celebrated strong seasons in basketball and Nordic skiing.
The boys’ varsity basketball squad, which went 7-13 and reached the Western Class C quarterfinals, gave its most valuable player award to senior Hassan Jeylani. Junior Bill Ngoal was given the Coaches’ Award. Junior John Malia was named most improved player.
The boys’ junior varsity team gave its most improved award to Ian Rummler.
The girls’ varsity team had another superb season, going 17-4 for the second straight winter and reaching the Western Class C Final for the first time.
Junior Morgan Woodhouse was named team MVP. Senior Mariam Qazi was given the Coaches’ Award. Senior Nina Russem was selected as most improved.
Qazi, along with seniors Annie Cutler and Zoe Sobel, were also honored as Senior Scholar Athletes.
The girls’ Nordic ski team came in fifth at the Class C state meet in February. The boys placed seventh.
Otis Wortley from the boys’ squad and Ellie Cole from the girls’ were given Coaches’ awards. Nate Niles was honored with the “Poetry in Motion” award.
Cole, Wortley and Joey Shapell were also named Student Scholar Athletes.
Waynflete doesn’t have a girls’ hockey team, but a select group of players competed for Cape Elizabeth this winter. Sasha Timpson was named the MVP. Maddie Berrang and Anna Libby both received most improved player awards.
All-Conference, as well Waynflete’s Forecaster Winter Athletes of the Year winners were also announced. Those names will be presented in future editions.
