BRUNSWICK — Charles P. “Chuck” Hurley, 85, died March 20 at the Maine Veteran’s Home in Augusta.

He was born in Boston on Dec. 30, 1923, son of Jeremiah Francis Hurley and Augusta Louise (Hanouseck) Hurley.

He was married to Marjorie May (Grey) Hurley for 58 years. They spent a lifetime together traveling the world and raising a family.

In 1942, after graduating from Hebron Academy, he joined the Navy and was deployed to Japan aboard the Yorktown during World War II. After the war ended, he continued his military service with tours of naval duty as a carrier pilot and an intelligence officer. His last station was at the Brunswick Naval Air Base until his retirement in 1969 as a lieutenant commander.

During the 1970s, he was a vice president of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Maine.

He retired in 1979 to pursue his true passion of sailing. He and his wife shared a love of the ocean and enjoyed sailing up and down the Maine coast.

His military awards and decorations include the Air Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, Navy Unit Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and the WWII Victory Medal, and the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Medal.

On April 3, 2009, he was to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award issued by the governor.

He was predeceased by his wife Marjorie in 2003 and his sister, Margaret Hurley Bailey, on March 15, with whom he had a close relationship.

He is survived by his daughter Debbie (Hurley) Wright and her husband David F. of Harpswell, his son Charles”Gus” Hurley Jr., and his wife Bonnie Perow Hurley of Topsham; his granddaughter Meghan Wright-LeClerc and her husband Robert LeClerc of Silverdale, Penn., his grandson David Erick Wright Jr., of Harpswell; and his great-grandchildren, Malika Ragon-Wright of Harpswell and David Trey Wright III, of Topsham; and nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, March 27, at Brackett Funeral Home, 29 Federal St., Brunswick.
