NORTH YARMOUTH — After a performance review conducted in private last week, the Board of Selectmen voted not to renew the contract of Administrative Assistant Scott Tilton. The search for a new administrator will begin at the board’s next meeting on April 7.

A prepared statement from the Board of Selectmen released shortly after the March 17 meeting said that “the board determined that while Tilton was able to move the town forward in several areas over the past two years, his management style did not fit with the town’s needs in the long term.”

Tilton in 2007 replaced former Administrator Scott Seaver, who left North Yarmouth to take the same post on Chebeague Island.

Tilton “was the catalyst for many projects, goals and ideas, and will be missed,” board Chairman Paul Napolitano said in the statement. “The board has made the decision to move in a different direction.”

Napolitano would not discuss that new direction Tuesday, but said the long-term needs of the town will be discussed at the April 7 meeting.

Tilton will remain in his post until his contract expires June 30, finishing current projects and helping with the transition.

In the prepared statement, Tilton said the decision not to renew his contract was a mutual one.

In an e-mail Tuesday, he said “the position was not one in which my style of management and the needs of the town were a good match. The people and employees were great and I hope I gained some lifelong friends.”
