Weston named
new VP at USM
BANGOR — Margaret A. Weston of Yarmouth has been appointed the new vice president for advancement at USM, effective April 6. In her new capacity, she will serve as the chief development officer and the president and CEO of the USM Foundation.
Weston most recently chaired the national Commission on Higher Education Governance and served on the University of Maine System Board of Trustees from 1998-2008.

Goduti awarded
Purple Heart
PORTLAND — Lex Goduti, sniper with the the 1-26th Infantry; Viper Company, was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received on Sept. 13, 2008, while stationed in the Korengal Valley, Afghanistan.
Goduti is the son of Nance Monaghan of Portland and Richard J. Goduti Jr., of Falmouth.

Peavey earns
humanitarian award
GEORGETOWN — Jim Peavey of Georgetown was awarded the Humanitarian Award by the Maine Chiefs of Police Association in recognition of his efforts in the fight against domestic violence.
Bath Police Chief Michael Field and Sagadahoc County Domestic Violence Investigator Steve Edmondson nominated Peavey for the honor.
Peavey serves as the associate director of community impact at United Way of Mid Coast Maine. He also chairs the Sagadahoc County Working Group on Family Violence and co-chairs the Lincoln and Sagadahoc Counties “A Call to Men,” anti-domestic violence initiative.

Good Deeds
Six Maine Bank & Trust branches, including Portland, South Portland, Scarborough, Westbrook, Yarmouth and Falmouth, sponsored the The Pantry Project for the month of February. They collected 20 boxes filled with non-perishable food for local food pantries.
Rowe Ford donated $10,000 to the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital at Maine Medical Center. This donation is the fourth installment of a $50,000, five-year commitment.
The Annual Valentine’s Day Canine Cocktail Party & Dog Kissing Contest held by Planet Dog raised $170 in support of the Planet Dog Foundation.
Coldwell Banker Cares, the charitable arm of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage, donated $10,000 to Youth Alternatives Ingraham from proceeds of the CB Cares Golf Tournament.
Scarborough’s Project G.R.A.C.E. made a generous donation of new teddy bears to the Scarborough Fire Department for use by the Department’s EMS crews to help calm children in times of emergencies.
In lieu of birthday presents, 10 year-old Sarah Cartmell of Freeport collected $75 in donations for the Keller Cares Program, which benefits Hurricane Ike & Katrina victims.
Biddeford Savings made a $600 donation to the Scarborough Food Pantry as a result of a promotional event in December.
Falmouth Rotary donated $2,500 to the Falmouth Food Pantry from money raised by their annual Christmas calendar fundraiser.
Coffee By Design donated $2,772 to Preble Street Teen Center’s “Uncensored Creativity Collective,” from monies raised by it’s Rebel Blend Fund.
The Wayside Food Rescue Program purchased a new refrigerated box truck with donations provided by The Nine Wicket Foundation, The Hudson Foundation, The Eunice Frye Home Foundation, TD Charitable Foundation, The Thomas E. Maren Foundation, Simmons Foundation, and The Agnes M. Lindsay Trust.

New Ventures
Betsy Oulton of Falmouth has started a new business, Total Office Assistance, providing administrative support and specialized services on an as-needed basis.
Steven P. Lavallee of Yarmouth purchased The Mortgage Office, located at 360 U.S. Route 1 in Yarmouth and offer mortgage services and insurance products from its offices in Yarmouth and Portland.
Hobbs Funeral Home recently opened its newly-renovated Scarborough facility located at 671 U.S. Route 1.
The Sheridan Corporation, a General Contractor with offices in Fairfield and Portland, has changed ownership. Bradley Nelson and Mitch Sammons have acquired the corporation from former president Douglas Cutchin.
Burleigh Electric has moved its offices from Portland back to Falmouth. It’s new location is 390 U.S. Route 1, Unit 4, Falmouth.
Portland-based pet pharmaceutical company, Putney, Inc., has formed a Veterinary Advisory Board to provide clinical expertise in product development.

Awards
The Maine Bar Foundation, a non-profit devoted to law-related charitable work, awarded Justice Kermit Lipez of South Portland with the President’s Award for Access to Justice in recognition of his leadership of Maine’s Justice Action Group. Thomas H. Kelley of Freeport was awarded the Howard H. Dana Jr. Award for his achievements spanning 30 years with Pine Tree Legal Assistance. The foundation also recognized the pro bono services provided by the law firms of Verrill Dana and Pierce Atwood; and attorneys, Sheldon J. Tepler, Esq. of Topsham, with Hardy, Wolf & Downing, PA; David Paris, Esq. of Falmouth, with Law Office of David Paris; and Meri N. Lowry, Esq. of Portland, with Unum.
Christian Gordon of Biddeford, executive chef at The Inn on Peaks Island, was named the 2009 Chef of the Year by the Maine Restaurant Association.
Scott Simons Architects of Portland earned an Honor Award for excellence in architecture at the New Hampshire Chapter of the American Institute of Architects in recognition of the Tilton Academic Building.
VNA weekend care coordinator Melissa Salter, RN, of Portland, received the Home Care Hero of VNA Award.
Michelle Grondin Raber of Scarborough was honored by the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors for outstanding performance and sales during 2008.
Planet Dog earned the 2008 Pinnacle Award in the Pet Age Magazine for its “Slobber-Wick” collection of of dog toys.
