SMCC baseball, softball earn victories

The Southern Maine Community College baseball and softball teams battled the elements as well as the opposition last weekend and earned their share of triumph. Softball lost 12-4 to Johnson State College in a rain and hailstorm Friday, but bounced back with a doubleheader sweep of Vermont Tech (8-1, 9-8) Saturday and a sweep of Dean College (14-10, 14-2) Sunday to improve to 18-8 (13-1 in Yankee Small College Conference play). The Seawolves (ranked seventh in the USCAA coaches’ poll) were paced by freshman Nicole Tuttle, who went 6-for-7 against Vermont Tech and 8-for-10 with four doubles and seven RBI against Dean, performances which earned her the YSCC Player of the Week honor. The SMCC baseball team swept Vermont Tech 13-0 and 3-1 Saturday, then got swept by Dean College (14-3, 8-2) Sunday. The Seawolves are now 17-4 (14-2 in YSCC) and are ranked fifth nationally. Coleman Findlay won both games last week with 13 scoreless innings and was named YSCC Player of the Week.
