Top teams square off consistently

With the spring sports season right around the corner, let’s take a peek at some of the most appetizing contests on the agenda.

Baseball

Falmouth is scheduled to begin its baseball season at defending Western Class B champion Cape Elizabeth Thursday. The Yachtsmen then have a week-and-a-half off before playing at Yarmouth (April 27). They also visit Greely (May 7) and Freeport (May 22). Top home games include visits from Greely (April 29), Yarmouth (May 25) and Cape Elizabeth (May 27).

Greely is a perennial contender and 2009 should be no different. The Rangers open at Sacopee Thursday. They also visit Yarmouth (May 19) and Cape Elizabeth (June 3). Greely hosts Cape Elizabeth (May 11), Freeport (May 20), St. Dom’s (May 25) and Yarmouth (May 29).

Speaking of Yarmouth, the Clippers start at home against NYA Thursday. They host York April 29 and Cape Elizabeth May 13. Yarmouth visits York May 27.

Freeport, seeking its first victory since the 2007 season, opens at home with Poland Thursday. The Falcons host Cape Elizabeth May 2. They play at North Yarmouth Academy May 18.

In Class C, NYA has its first home game April 29 against Sacopee. The Panthers host St. Dom’s May 1, Richmond May 4 and Waynflete May 20. They visit Waynflete May 6 and St. Dom’s May 15.

Softball

Turning to softball, the theme of compelling matchups continues.

Falmouth opens at Cape Elizabeth Thursday. The Yachtsmen also visit Yarmouth (April 27), defending Class B state champion Fryeburg (May 1), Greely (May 7), and Freeport (May 22). Falmouth hosts Greely (April 29), Yarmouth (May 25) and Cape Elizabeth (May 27).

Freeport starts its season at home with Poland Thursday. The Falcons also host Cape Elizabeth (May 2), Yarmouth (May 16), and Gray-New Gloucester (May 27). Freeport visits Gray-New Gloucester (April 27), Fryeburg (April 29), Yarmouth (May 8) and Greely (May 20).

The Rangers’ first game is Thursday at Sacopee. Greely visits Gray-New Gloucester May 13, Yarmouth May 19 and Cape Elizabeth June 3. The Rangers play host to Fryeburg April 27 and Cape Elizabeth May 11.

Yarmouth welcomes Cape Elizabeth May 13 and Fryeburg May 22.

NYA is not fielding a varsity softball team this spring.

Boys’ lacrosse

The boys’ and girls’ lacrosse schedules are as challenging as ever.

Yarmouth is the defending Class B boys’ state champion. The Clippers have a state championship game rematch to start the year when they host Cape Elizabeth April 27. Yarmouth also hosts Freeport May 6, defending Class A champion Scarborough May 12, Portland May 18 and ancient rival NYA June 1. The Clippers visit the likes of Greely (April 30), Cheverus (May 9), Kennebunk (May 15), and Falmouth (May 27).

NYA, in addition to playing at Yarmouth, also visits Cheverus (May 2), Scarborough (May 5), and Falmouth (May 20). Top home games include Freeport (April 28), Kennebunk (May 9), Cape Elizabeth (May 13), Greely (May 26) and Portland (May 29).

Falmouth opens at home versus Scarborough April 28. Two days later, the Yachtsmen host Kennebunk. They also welcome Freeport (May 16) and Cheverus (June 3). Falmouth goes to Cape Elizabeth May 6 and Greely, in a playoff rematch (May 29).

Speaking of the Rangers, last year’s surprise team starts at home against Portland April 28. They go to Kennebunk May 2 and meet last year’s playoff nemesis, Cape Elizabeth, May 20.

Freeport plays host to St. Dom’s (April 30), Waynflete (May 9), Deering (May 20) and Cape Elizabeth (May 25). The Falcons visit Scarborough May 18.

Girls’ lacrosse

For the girls, NYA and Yarmouth meet just once in the regular season, May 27, at Yarmouth. The defending Eastern B champion Panthers also visit Massabesic (April 28), Marshwood (May 1), Cheverus (May 21), and Waynflete, in a state final rematch (May 29). NYA is home to Scarborough (May 5), Kennebunk (May 7), Cape Elizabeth (May 11), Greely (May 19) and Falmouth (June 3).

The Clippers also play host to Massabesic (May 1), Marshwood (May 5), Kennebunk (May 12), Cheverus (May 22) and Waynflete (June 1). They play at Falmouth (April 29), Scarborough (May 7), Cape Elizabeth (May 19), and Greely (May 21).
Falmouth has home tests against Marshwood (May 16), Cape Elizabeth (May 26) and Greely, in a playoff rematch (May 29). The Yachtsmen are at Waynflete (May 1), Cheverus (May 7), Scarborough (May 19) and Kennebunk (May 21).

Freeport opens at home against Noble April 28. The Falcons have other home tests against Portland (May 8) and Bonny Eagle (May 21). They visit South Portland May 12.

Greely begins at Scarborough April 28. The Rangers also visit Kennebunk (May 1) and longtime nemesis Waynflete (May 11). Greely hosts Cape Elizabeth (May 7) and Cheverus (May 15).

Track

The Western Maine Conference outdoor track championship is Saturday, May 30, at Yarmouth High School. The state meet is Saturday, June 6. Class B is Mt. Desert Island. Class C competes in Bath.

Tennis

The tennis singles tournament begins May 16 and goes through June 1. The team tournament commences June 2.
