Former Yarmouth standout earns lacrosse honor

Former Yarmouth High girls’ lacrosse star and All American Jess Martineau was recently named Little East Conference Rookie of the Week for her play with the University of Southern Maine women’s team. Martineau, a sophomore, had 13 goals in three games, including a seven-goal outburst versus Western Connecticut State.

NYA swimmers shine at YMCA national meet

North Yarmouth Academy junior Rachel Clegg set a state record in the 200 breaststroke (2 minutes, 26.85 seconds) at last week’s YMCA National championships in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. NYA’s Ian Nichols, teamed with Phillip Jacques of Brunswick, Won Ho Chang of Hyde and James Wells of Morse to come in third in the 200 medley relay (1:32.19) and 13th in the 400 free relay (3:08.62), setting a Maine record in the latter.

New soccer organization debuting

A new soccer organization, Maine Premier Soccer and Portland Phoenix, will launch at the Portland Sports Complex this month. Kicking off during April vacation week, all details are available at mainepremiersoccer.com

Falmouth Youth Soccer registration

Falmouth Youth Soccer has opened registration for the fall travel season. Any child who is 8 years old by July 30 and/or going into third grade is eligible to play. Evaluations for U-12 and U-13 boys will be held May 4 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. U-14 boys and girls go May 5 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. U-12 and U-13 girls try out from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on May 6. All evaluations take place at Portland Sports Center and are mandatory.

Women’s basketball league taking registration

The Hancock Lumber Women’s Summer Basketball League, hosted by Southern Maine Community college, is taking registration for the 2009 season. Games will be held Tuesday and Thursday nights from June 2 through July 9. Registration deadline is May 22.

First Annual Run or Walk for AIDS upcoming

The Frannie Peabody Center is holding a Beach and Bay 5K Run or Walk for AIDS Saturday, May 2 in Ogunquit, beginning at 11 a.m., and around Back Cove in Portland, starting at 12 p.m. The Portland race is USATF certified. Both races will be professionally timed.
