The chairman of Buxton’s Budget Committee has resigned effective Sunday, May 31, to seek another elected seat in the June election.

“I’m running for selectman,” Peter Burns said.

He has filed papers for Cliff Emery’s three-year term, which expires in June.

Burns, who has been chairman of the Budget Committee for the past five years, submitted his resignation April 6. Burns has served eight years on the committee.

He said a charter change passed last June had reduced the number of Budget Committee seats from 12 to seven and became effective this year at the end of June. So, he resigned from his term, which expires in 2011, to allow others an opportunity to run for his budget seat. He didn’t think it fair to hang onto the seat while seeking another elected office.

“I have been privileged to serve on the board for eight years and thank the voters of Buxton for electing me,” Burns said in his resignation letter.
