Livada named Player of the Week

Former Cape Elizabeth standout Drake Livada, now a junior designated hitter at Brandeis University, was named the University Athletic Association’s Player of the Week after hitting safely in all five games last week, to the tune of .571 with four RBI. Livada is hitting .345 for the season. He leads his team with three home runs and 22 RBI.

Scarborough track standouts compete in New York

Several members of Scarborough’s first-rate boys’ track program kicked off their season at the Pole Vault Invitational in New York. Brad Nakanishi was second in the pole vault (with a top jump of 14 feet). The Red Storm’s 4×1,600 relay (Nate Hathaway, Craig Robinson, Zach Brown and Nick Morris) was ninth (19 minutes, 2.87 seconds). Hathaway was fourth in the two-mile (9:48.82). Sean Griffin came in 21st (10:35.33). Brian Woodbury set a personal record with his top shot put throw of 48 feet, 8 inches. Morris threw 23-9 in the shot put.

Maine Waves holding tryouts

The Maine Waves girls’ lacrosse club will be holding a tryout for its 2009 summer team Sunday, May 3 at 11 a.m. at the Preble Street/Back Cove field in Portland. Maine Waves is an inclusive four-week program of practices, scrimmages and tournaments. Any high school varsity player is eligible to tryout.

SP National Little League Opening Day upcoming

The South Portland National Little League will hold its Opening Day ceremonies Saturday, May 2 at 9 a.m., at the Majors field on Pine Street.

Women’s basketball league taking registration

The Hancock Lumber Women’s Summer Basketball League, hosted by Southern Maine Community College, is taking registration for the 2009 season. Games will be held Tuesday and Thursday nights from June 2 through July 9. Registration deadline is May 22.

First Annual Run or Walk for AIDS upcoming

The Frannie Peabody Center is holding a Beach and Bay 5K Run or Walk for AIDS Saturday, May 2 in Ogunquit, beginning at 11 a.m., and around Back Cove in Portland, starting at 12 p.m. The Portland race is USATF certified. Both races will be professionally timed.
