Local players named to SMAA hockey all-star teams

The SMAA boys’ and girls’ ice hockey all-star teams were finally released last week. The boys’ first team included Scarborough junior forwards Nate Gadbois and Jacob Rutt and Red Storm senior defenseman Nick Tolman. Scarborough senior forward Hunter Wood, junior Andrew Nigro, senior defenseman Jim Soules and junior goalie Matt Mayo, along with South Portland senior forward Nick Fornwalt, made the second team. For the girls, Scarborough senior forward Chelsea Barrett, junior forward Jackie Morin and freshman defenseman Abby Rutt made the first team. Scarborough junior Marina Sterrer made the second team. Scarborough sophomore Spencer Shoebottom was an honorable mention.

SMCC baseball wins 30th game

The Southern Maine Community College baseball team downed Mass Bay CC 14-8 Tuesday to improve to 30-8 on the season. Montana Colby’s two-run double put the Seawolves on top. Alan Ellison earned the win. 

SP National Little League Opening Day upcoming
The South Portland National Little League will old its Opening Day ceremonies Saturday at 9 a.m., at the Majors field on Pine Street.

Maine Waves holding tryouts
The Maine Waves girls’ lacrosse club will be holding a tryout for its 2009 summer team Sunday, May 3 at 11 a.m. at the Preble St./Back Cove field in Portland. Maine Waves is an inclusive four-week program of practices, scrimmages and tournaments. Any high school varsity player is eligible to tryout.

Women’s basketball league taking registration
The Hancock Lumber Women’s Summer Basketball League, hosted by Southern Maine Community college, is taking registration for the 2009 season. Games will be held Tuesday and Thursday nights from June 2 through July 9. Registration deadline is May 22.

First Annual Run or Walk for AIDS upcoming
The Frannie Peabody Center is holding a Beach and Bay 5K Run or Walk for AIDS Saturday in Ogunquit, beginning at 11 a.m., and around Back Cove in Portland, starting at 12 p.m. The Portland race is USATF certified. Both races will be professionally timed.

Sunday lacrosse clinics offered
Cheverus boys’ varsity lacrosse coach Deke Andrew and other top coaches from the area will be hosting weekly Sunday lacrosse clinics from June 7 through Aug. 9 at Deering High’s Memorial Field. The cost is $75 for five weeks or $150 for 10 weeks. The program is a mix of instruction and game play and is open to boys and girls entering grades 2 through 8 next fall.

Scarborough softball camp upcoming
The Big Hits Summer Softball Camp, sponsored by Scarborough Community Services, will be held in June and July at the Scarborough High School fields. Scarborough varsity coach Tom Griffin leads the lineup of coaches involved. Ages 6 through 8 go from June 29 to July 3 from 9 a.m., to 12 p.m. The cost is $100. Ages 8 through 12 attend the same dates from 9 a.m., to 3 p.m. The cost is $185. Ages 12 through 17 go from July 13 through 18 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The cost is $185. Scarborough residents will receive a $10 to $15 discount.

SP Recreation offering taekwondo
South Portland Parks and Recreation will continue its popular Taekwondo classes throughout the summer. Classes are held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5 to 7 p.m. The first session begins June 2 and goes until July 2. An additional session begins July 9 and ends Aug. 11 All classes are held at the South Portland Community Center. The cost is $30 per session.
