Scarborough girls make an early statement

Track is always in season in Forecaster Country, but there’s something about the spring which seems to bring out the best in local runners, jumpers and throwers.

The curtain came up on a new season last week and at first glance, it appears as if Cape Elizabeth, Scarborough and South Portland are headed for great things.

Storm rages on

Scarborough’s girls’ program has run roughshod over the league and state the past several years and is continuing its dominance so far this spring.

After winning their first meet at Portland, the Red Storm went to South Portland Monday to compete against the Red Riots, Bonny Eagle and Kennebunk and came in first with 150 points (90 better than the runner-up Scots). The Red Riots were third with 44 points.

Scarborough won the 400 (52.1 seconds) and 1,600 (4 minutes, 17.5 seconds) relays and captured 10 individuals events. Christy Manning took the discus (105 feet, 1 inch), shot put (35-4) and javelin (108-9). Emilia Scheemaker won the long jump (15-9) and triple jump (34-10.5). Rachelle Greene was first in the 100 (12.8) and the 200 (27.0). Jenny Snyder won the 100 hurdles (16.4), Abby Chick was first in the 400 (1:01.9), and Whitney Chamberlain took the 800 (2:20.4).

The Red Riots were led by Bobielyn Fisher, who won the pole vault (6 feet).

The Scarborough and South Portland boys were scheduled to go to Bonny Eagle Tuesday, but rain postponed that meet. The Red Storm were first in a home meet against Noble, Portland and Thornton Academy last week. The Red Riots beat Biddeford, Sanford and Windham at home in their first meet.

In Class B, Cape Elizabeth opened its season at home last Friday. The girls had 106 points to edge Wells by five. Freeport, Greater Portland Christian School and Waynflete also took part. The boys had 95 points and came in second behind Wells.

In the girls’ meet, the Capers got wins from Rachel Nichols in the 800 (2:23.6), Marita Stressenger in the mile (5:24.7) and two-mile (12:28.1), Skyler Dunfey in the 300 hurdles (59.4) and triple jump (28-10.5), Alexandra Bass in the pole vault (6 feet), and their 3,200 relay team (11:29.6).

The boys had wins from Jon Bass in the pole vault (11-6), Patrick Boland in the javelin (120-3) and Peter Brigham in the two-mile (10:43.7).

Up next

Cape Elizabeth (along with Lake Region and Old Orchard Beach) competes at York Friday. The Scarborough girls are idle until Tuesday when they take on host McAuley and Massabesic. The boys meet Massabesic, Sanford and host Portland Wednesday of next week. South Portland’s girls are at Thornton Academy (along with Marshwood and Windham) Tuesday. The boys compete at Windham (with Marshwood and Thornton Academy) next Wednesday.
