SOUTH PORTLAND — Walter S. “Charlie” Wynne Jr., 79, died May 5 at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House after a long illness.

He was born in Portland on Oct. 5, 1929, son of Walter and Alice Wynne.

In 1947, he graduated from Portland High School.

He served in the Army during the Korean War.

In 1953, he entered the apprentice program at the Portland Press Herald/ Maine Sunday Telegram. He retired from the composing room after a career spanning 40 years at the newspaper.

He was an active Mason and had recently received a 50-year pin from Hiram Lodge in South Portland.

He attended the First Congregational Church of South Portland and was a member of the Eskimo Club at the church.

His great accomplishment was building a camp with his fishing buddy, Hubert, in the north wilderness on Caribou Lake. He taught his wife Nancy to fish and together they spent many days on the lake fishing in rain or shine.

He and his wife enjoyed travelling, including taking several cruises and trips to England to visit his cousins.

He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Nancy; his stepchildren, David Shackley and his wife Julie of Lewiston, Laurie-Sue Adams of South Portland, Heidi Rosengren and husband Chris of South Portland; four grandchildren, Seth Tours, Sara Tours, Cole Rosengren, and Hannah Rosengren; his cousin Jack F.J. Wynne and his wife Betty of Bournemouth, England; and Several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours and a Masonic service were held on May 7. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., May 8, at the First Congregational Church, 301 Cottage Road, South Portland.

Arrangements are by Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland.
