WEST BATH — Philip A. Day, 83, died May 9 in Lewiston.
He was born in Bath on July 31, 1925, a son of Stewart H. Sr. and Frances V. (Gilman) Day.
He attended Bath schools and graduated from Morse High School.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. As a member of the 79th Infantry Division, he landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day. He was later wounded in action during the Battle of the Bulge and awarded the Purple Heart Medal.
For 48 years, he worked as a ship fitter at Bath Iron Works, and retired as a lead man.
Following his retirement, he created the West Bath “Looney-Lagoon,” an unusual collection of lawn items he crafted by hand.
His hobbies included hunting, fishing and going to flea markets and antique auctions to find items for his collection of brass artifacts, coins, and stamps.
He is predeceased by his wife, Joan M. Day, who died in 1988.
He is survived by a son, Larry Day and his wife Adriana of New York City; a brother, Stewart H. Day Jr., and his wife Teresa of Bath; a grandson, Michael P. Day of New York City; and two half-sisters, Tamara Badders and Lucinda Ballard, both of Florida.
There will be no public services.
