Care for our best friends

Harry Truman once famously said, “If you want a friend in Washington, get a dog.” Even the present occupant in the White House has taken that advice to heart with the arrival of a new puppy for Sasha and Malia Obama. Taking care of that “friend” for optimal health and happiness takes some effort and know-how, but the rewards reaped are immeasurable. Come learn some pet care tips from Kim Harker of the Naples Veterinary Clinic Saturday, May 16, at 11 a.m. at the Naples Public Library.

Dr. Harker will discuss summer care tips for pets, such as grooming, care of teeth, protection from biting insects and how to prevent heat stroke and overexertion while exercising. Learn how to prevent some cancers and overpopulation with spaying and neutering. And just as with us humans, learn what to do about feeding our pets to avoid obesity and other feeding related issues.

Next week is the start of National Dog Bite Prevention Week. Dr. Harker will talk about dog bite prevention with kids, how to avoid this situation from ever happening to your child, and what you as an owner can do to keep your dog from biting.

Dr. Harker received her veterinary degree from the University of Tennessee in 1993 and has been working with the Norway Vet Clinic’s office in Naples since 2002. So make sure your best friend is living his best life, bring your pet care questions and pick up some valuable information on your pet’s care and comfort. For more information, please call the library at 693-6841.

Kimmy Fund update

A great crowd gathered to support Kim (Burtsell) Laughlin at the benefit held at Shaker’s. There was something for everyone: great food, music, a silent auction, and most importantly, a chance to help Kim. Thank you to all that participated, both by organizing or working at the event, or just coming out. Special thanks to Cindy and Frank North, initiators of the successful event.

If you weren’t able to attend the benefit, you can still send much needed donations to: Evergreen Credit Union, P.O. Box 1679, Naples, 04055-1679.

Songo Garden Club sale

The members of this local club are ready to share the fruits of their labor. On Saturday, May 23, 9 a.m.-1 p.m, the Naples Village Green will be abuzz with activity. Many indoor and outdoor plants will be for sale, straight from the gardens of the club members.

In addition, there will be a white elephant table, handmade and painted bird houses, homemade bird treats, garden in a jar and more. This sounds like a can’t-miss event, so come rain or shine (if raining it will be held in the Town Hall Gym).

I didn’t realize how much the Garden Club does for Naples. This sale will help support their many endeavors, including helping to maintain practically all the flowers you enjoy when you’re out and about in Naples. Those hanging plants at the Naples Library are some of the best I have seen. I always eye them with envy!

The Songo Garden Club was started in 1953 by a group of Naples Ladies ( and now some men, too) to beautify the Village Green area. Please help them keep Naples beautiful by attending this sale.

The Singer Community Center

We’ve seen the work going on at the Grange. I’m sure you’re as curious as I am about what the new Grange has to offer. The wait is over. The grand opening and ribbon cutting celebration will happen Saturday, June 6, 11-2 p.m. Come mingle with your neighbors as you enjoy live entertainment, a luncheon and some fun kid’s games. What a nice way to spend some quality time with your family and show your support for this great new addition to our lives here in Naples.
