Continued excitement on the diamond, field, track and courts highlighted the week that was. Here’s the latest:

Baseball: Red Storm keep winning

On the diamond, while South Portland was giving powerhouse Deering all it could handle, Scarborough has won five straight. The latest victories were 3-2 at Bonny Eagle, 4-1 over visiting Noble and 9-2 at Windham. Junior Jake Rutt had a superb start against the Scots, senior ace Chris Bernard fanned 15 against the Knights, and junior Andrew Myers earned the win on the hill against the Eagles. The Red Storm (8-2 and third behind Westbrook and Deering in the latest Western Class A Heal Points standings) went to Kennebunk Thursday (too late for print), visit Marshwood Friday and host Biddeford Tuesday.

In Western B, Cape Elizabeth took a two-game skid into Wednesday’s home game against St. Dom’s (played too late for print). The Capers fell 7-2 at Yarmouth last Wednesday and lost 7-3 at York Monday to fall to 7-3 on the year (good for second in the Heals). Cape Elizabeth is home with Fryeburg Monday and goes to Falmouth Wednesday.

Softball: Capers gear up for showdown

With Monday’s home showdown (and regional final rematch) against visiting Fryeburg in the back of their minds, the Cape Elizabeth softball team improved to 9-1 and stretched its win streak to four games earlier this week with a 1-0 victory at York and a 15-0 (five inning) home romp over Lake Region. The Capers’ bats exploded for 14 runs in the fourth inning against the Lakers. Senior catcher Colleen Martin had a home run and senior pitcher Trish Thibodeau allowed just one hit. Cape Elizabeth (sixth in the latest Western B Heals) hosted St. Dom’s Wednesday (too late for print), then turned its attention to the undefeated, top ranked Raiders, who ended their season and reign as champions a year ago. Next Wednesday, the Capers go to Falmouth.

In Western A, Scarborough continues to shine. The Red Storm held off visiting Gorham 2-1 (in 10 innings) last Friday, then downed host Massabesic 12-0 (in six innings) Monday to improve to 11-0 on the year. Sophomore Abby Rutt had the game-winning hit against the Rams. Freshman Mo Hannan dominated on the hill and senior Catie Funk homered against the Mustangs. Scarborough (first in the Heals) was home with Thornton Academy Wednesday (too late for print) and goes to Biddeford for a regional final rematch Tuesday.

South Portland is quietly putting together another stellar campaign. The Red Riots made it eight straight victories and improved to 9-1 with a 12-0 home win over Windham and a 9-2 victory at Noble. Against the Eagles, the stellar sophomore tandem of Alexis Bogdanovich (three-hitter on the mound) and Danielle DiBiase (four RBI) carried the day. Against the Knights, senior Lauren Tuttle threw a one-hitter. South Portland (tied with Gorham for fourth in the Heals) was home with Marshwood Wednesday (too late for print), visits Gorham Friday and hosts Massabesic Tuesday.

Boys’ lacrosse: Cape Elizabeth rocks South Portland

Following Saturday night’s 13-7 home loss to Portland, the Cape Elizabeth boys’ lacrosse team was looking to take out its frustrations. Unfortunately for South Portland, the Red Riots were next on the Capers’ schedule.

Monday night in South Portland, Cape Elizabeth improved to 6-2 with an 18-3 win, as senior Mike Holden scored five times and junior Tom Foden added four goals and four assists. The Capers (first in the latest Western A Heals) host Greely Friday.

The Red Riots (who had also lost 14-5 at Scarborough last Friday) fell to 3-4 after Monday’s loss and are ninth in the region. South Portland hoped to even its record when it hosted Windham Wednesday (too late for print). The Red Riots visit Waynflete Friday and host York next Wednesday.

Defending Class A state champion Scarborough not only beat South Portland, but also downed visiting Freeport 7-3 Monday night to improve to 6-2. The Falcons led 2-0 after one period and the Red Storm only had a 3-2 halftime lead before opening it up a bit in the second half. Scarborough (third in the Heals) played at Cheverus Wednesday (too late for print), then have six days off before hosting Kennebunk in a regional final rematch.

Girls’ lacrosse: Scarborough heats up

On the girls’ side, the Red Storm of Scarborough improved to 5-3 with recent wins over host York (17-10) and visiting Falmouth (14-9). Against the Wildcats, junior Lindsay Hagerman scored six times. Hagerman had six more versus the Yachtsmen and junior Ellie Morin added five. Scarborough (eighth in the latest Western A Heals) was at Massabesic Thursday (too late for print), then has a week off to prepare for a home showdown with Kennebunk, the team which eliminated the Red Storm from last year’s playoffs.

South Portland had a great chance to even its record Tuesday night at Portland, but wound up suffering an agonizing 7-6 defeat to fall to 2-4. The Red Riots (ninth in Western A) were home with Thornton Academy Thursday (too late for print), visit Fryeburg Saturday and play at Sanford Tuesday.

In Western B, Cape Elizabeth returned to play after six days off and gave perennial Eastern B power Yarmouth a scare before losing 12-10 at home Tuesday. Senior Maggie Darling scored three goals. The Capers (4-3 and third in the Heals) hosted undefeated, defending Class B champion Waynflete Thursday night (too late for print) and go to Falmouth Tuesday.

Track: Regular season concludes

When Cape Elizabeth hosted Falmouth, Greely and Yarmouth in an outdoor track meet Thursday (too late for print), the curtain came down on the 2009 regular season.

Scarborough wrapped up its year (with Gorham and Windham) at Westbrook Tuesday, where both teams came in first.

South Portland (along with Cheverus, McAuley and Portland) competed at Deering Monday. The boys were second and the girls came in third.

Both the Western Maine Conference and Southern Maine Activities Association championships meets are May 30. The Class A and B state championships are the following Saturday, June 6.

Tennis: Scarborough boys pass a big test

On the hardcourts, while the tennis singles tournament was getting underway (please see story, page 13), team play continued to produce victories.

The Scarborough boys avenged last year’s playoff heartbreak Monday with a 4-1 win at Cheverus to improve to 9-0. The Red Storm (third behind Windham and Westbrook in the Western A Heals) are at the Blue Blazes Friday and host the Eagles Tuesday. Scarborough’s girls are 8-1 and tied with McAuley for second in Western A behind Portland.

South Portland’s girls improved to 5-4 after a 5-0 win at Massabesic Monday. The Red Riots were ninth in the latest Heals. The boys (sixth in the standings) are 4-5 after a 5-0 home win over Massabesic Monday.

In Western B, Cape Elizabeth’s boys took a 7-1 mark and the No. 5 spot in the Heals to Fryeburg Wednesday (too late for print). The girls were 6-3 (fourth in the standings) and are riding a four-match winning streak.
