SCARBOROUGH — Runners, jumpers and throwers from the city of Portland more than held their own at the Southern Maine Activities Association outdoor track championship meet Saturday in Scarborough.

The Cheverus boys had the best showing, tying Bonny Eagle for first place with 94 points. Portland had 34 points and tied Westbrook for seventh place. Deering (21 points) was 10th.

On the girls’ side, powerhouse Scarborough cruised to an easy victory with 161 points. Cheverus continued its stellar season with a 61-point performance, good for runner-up. Deering (23.5 points) came in 10th, McAuley (16) placed 11th, and Portland (one point) finished 16th.

Running to the top

Cheverus’ boys enjoyed their usual distance dominance. The Stags won the 3,200 relay (8 minutes, 11.43 seconds). Taylor Dundas was first in both the mile (4:27.94) and two-mile (9:49.50).

Andrew Snyder finished second in the 800 (2:00.68). Jack Terwilliger was runner-up in the mile (4:28.77) and was also second in the two-mile (9:53.0). Tim Woods came in fourth in both the 800 (2:03.10) and the mile (4:37.34). Josh Reali finished fifth in the 800 (2:03.97).

Other points came from Joe Caiazzo, third in the 300 hurdles (42.43 seconds); Beau Michaud, third in the discus (139 feet, 6.5 inches) and sixth in the shot put (45-3.5); John White, fourth in the discus (131-4) and fourth in the shot put (51-9.25); and Thomas Yates, sixth in the discus (129-5).
Cheverus was also second in the 1,600 relay (3:35.33).

Portland featured standout sophomore Imadhi Zagon, who won the 200 (23.32) and the long jump (21-8), was second in the high jump (5-10) and third in the 100 (11.80).

Deering’s points came from David Hart (runner-up in the javelin, 155-1) Michael Tifiano (third in the 110 hurdles, 15.75; and fourth in the 300 hurdles, 43.06); Seth Neuts (sixth in the mile, 4:42.11); and its 400 (sixth, 46.83) and 1,600 (3:45.95) relay teams.

Summa soars

The Cheverus girls were led by Caroline Summa, who won the high jump (5 feet), came in second in the 400 (1:00.94) and third in the triple jump (33-7.5). Liana Rubinoff placed third in the two-mile (11:58.66) and sixth in the mile (5:32.96). Hanna Lyons came in third in the long jump (15-7.75), fourth in the 100 (13.43) and was also fourth in the 200 (28.25). Amelia Lundkvist was fourth in the mile (5:25.28) and finished fifth in the two-mile (12:22.09). Emily Ford came in sixth in the long jump (14-9.25) The Stags were fourth in both the 400 (54.27) and 3,200 (10:14.78) relays and came in sixth in the 1,600 relay (4:29.58).

“It was great to see the girls finish as runner-up this year in spite of our missing several of our athletes,” said Cheverus coach Valerie Guillet. “Even better to know that this was by far Cheverus’ best combined boy/girl result in the past nine years. The performances will continue to improve and that’s why we are looking forward to the state championship. There is nothing we can do score wise against teams like Edward Little and Scarborough. Our numbers are just too small, but we can always measure ourselves against past seasons, and thus far this has been the most successful.”

For Deering, Claire Ramonas was runner-up in the shot put (36-11), Angela Balzano tied for second in the high jump (4-8), Britni Mikulanecz tied for fifth in the high jump (4-8), Jane Farrell came in sixth in the 300 hurdles (52.37). The Rams’ 400 relay team was third (54.05).

McAuley was paced by Olivia Mackenzie, who was second in the two-mile (11:45.55) and third in the mile (5:20.52). The Lions came in fifth in the 3,200 relay (10:44.23).

Portland’s point came from Eleni Anderson, who placed sixth in the 400 (1:03.66).

States

Next up for city teams is the state championships, this weekend.

Cheverus, Deering and Portland will travel to Thornton Academy for the Class A meet. McAuley will compete in the Class B championship at Mt. Desert Island. Waynflete (which competed, but did not score at the Western Maine Conference championship meet last weekend in Yarmouth) will take part in the Class C meet in Bath.
