FALMOUTH — Ella S. Astle, 93, died Nov. 21 at the Skilled Care Center at the Cedars in Portland.

Born in Millinocket on Nov. 2, 1916, she was a daughter of Mitchell J. and Julia M. (Albert) Simond. She graduated from Stearns High School in 1934 and from Farmington Normal School in 1937.

While teaching elementary school in Crystal, she met and married Fenton “Penny” Astle. For 24 years they lived in Island Falls, where she worked as a beautician and a librarian.

In 1962 she moved to Bangor and worked for an accounting office at S.S. Kresge/K-Mart until her retirement in 1981.

She moved to Falmouth in 1994 to be closer to her family.

An avid Boston Celtics and Red Sox fan, she seldom missed watching a game on television and keeping scoring statistics, well into her 90’s.

She was the official cheerleader of “Ella’s Girls,” a bowling team in Westbrook and friend to all at the bowling alley.

Her daughter-in-law, Janis Astle, was a constant source of support for her as her caregiver, housekeeper, chauffeur, hairdresser, companion and best friend for her 15 years in Falmouth.

She was predeceased by her husband Penny, who died in 1959, two brothers, Emile, who died in 1943 and Peter, who died in 1966.

She is survived by her son Fredric Astle and his wife Janis of Cumberland Foreside; two grandchildren, F. Jay Astle and his wife Rebecca Lincoln of Rockland and Karyl Astle Hazard and her husband James “Jaime” of Falmouth; three great-grandchildren, Caton, Lauren and Jake Hazard of Falmouth; former daughter-in-law Karen Astle Richards of Scarborough; and two special nieces, Betty Astle Harris of Lewiston and Ann Simond Cyr of Millinocket.

Visiting hours were held Tuesday at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home.

Burial will be 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 27 at Island Falls Cemetery.
