PORTLAND — The driver in a September crash that left a teenager dead and several people injured has been arrested on a charge of manslaughter.

Yannick Mulongo, 21, of South Portland, also faces three counts of aggravated elevated assault and a charge of operating under the influence. 

Mulongo was arrested Sunday afternoon, after attending services at the International Christian Church on Lafayette Street, according to Police Department Capt. Ted Ross.

“We had information he was at his church,” said Ross. “He’d been wanted for quite a while.”

Ross said Mulongo was charged shortly after the Sept. 20 accident, but he could not be found. The Cumberland County district attorney’s review of the case concluded two weeks ago.

According to police, Mulongo was driving on Brighton Avenue in the early morning with three passengers in his 2001 Ford Mustang, including 18-year-old Guy Kitoko, when his car allegedly crossed the center line and collided with another vehicle, near Capisic Street. He also reportedly hit several telephone poles.

The other car was a Chevy Impala operated by Fartum Aden. She had one passenger.

Kitoko died at the scene. Several of the others involved in the crash, including Mulongo, suffered broken bones and were taken to the hospital.

Kitoko was an honor roll student at Deering High School who also took classes at Portland Arts and Technology School. He was a member of the football team.

Mulongo is expected in court for a hearing on Tuesday.
