TOPSHAM — School Administrative District 75 teachers have been awarded more than $3,000 in grants from the Trust for Our Future: MSAD 75 Education Fund.

The nonprofit organization supports innovative projects and programs that enhance the public schools, and it has developed into a resource through which teachers can apply for grants.

The fund is governed by a board of community leaders and educators, and is independent from the SAD 75 Board of Directors, but endorsed by it. Grant funds come from individuals, corporate contributions, foundations and fundraisers.

Grant proposals can include innovative teaching and learning projects, including the use of technology, applied learning and service learning, experience in the arts, enrichment activities like school/community presentations, career learning and visiting artists and authors.

The Mt. Ararat High School I-Team received a $603 grant for its proposal, “Student Leadership Development for Technology Integration.” The money allowed the group to attend a three-day Maine Youth Action Network Conference held in Augusta. Students, teachers and technology department staff alike benefit from the team’s project assistance and technical support.

Woodside Elementary School fifth-grade teachers Vicky Dow and Marybeth Browne were awarded a $500 grant for their “Grandfriends” program, an inter-generational project with residents at the Highlands.

Mt. Ararat High School English teacher Claudette Brassil received $450 for her “Women’s Stories/Women’s Voices” proposal. Students select text and form book clubs as part of the third-year English course, and they invite community members to join their discussions. The trust’s support has enabled the project to continue into its 10th year.

Marianne Haughwout, a librarian at Bowdoin Central School and Harpswell Islands School, was awarded $913 to help fund the “Festival of Books.” The festival is a celebration of literature using Maine Student Book Awards from this year’s list as well as selections by the librarian from previous award winners. Fifth-grade teacher Abigail Svenson will work with Marianne on the project.

Mt. Ararat Physical Education teacher Ryan Holmes received a $650 grant for his “Morning Exercise” program, which is designed to promote student wellness and health.
