Deering wrestling 10th at states, Cheverus 15th

For the first time in a long time, the Deering wrestling team failed to produce a state champion this winter. The Rams did manage to come in 10th at the Class A meet in North Berwick Saturday with a score of 39.5 Cheverus had 10 points and came in 15th. Noble (135.5) won the title. Deering did have a pair of runner-ups. Heavyweight standout Tyler DeBardino lost 5-1 to Mt. Ararat’s Henry Chandler in the 285-pound final. Deiondrea Howard fell 9-4 to Noble’s Jake Bagley in the 135-pound division. Harrison Stein made it to the consolation final, but was pinned 53 seconds in by Massabesic’s Ethan Norwald. For Cheverus, Iain Whitis won the consolation final in the 103-pound class, edging Massabesic’s Lucas Dion, 3-2. Portland did not score.

Portland High athletic trainer honored

Longtime Portland High School athletic trainer Audrey McKenzie was recently named the NATA District 1 Winner of the SSATC/Gatorade Recognition Award for her excellent work as and athletic trainer and for going above and beyond in the school and community.

Portland Babe Ruth registration

Portland Babe Ruth is holding registration for youth 13 to 15 at the North Deering Congregational Church, 1364 Washington Ave., from 6 to 8 p.m., on Feb. 24 and March 3. Running program set to begin

Bowdoin hosting Girls and Women in Sports Day

Bowdoin College is hosting Girls and Women in Sports Day Sunday, Feb. 14 at the Farley Field House. The event, featuring free sports clinics taught by varsity women student-athletes from several sports, is free and open to girls in grades K-12. Day of Hockey fundraiser upcoming

“A Day of Hockey” to benefit the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital will be held Feb. 28 at the Cumberland County Civic Center. There will be youth games beginning at 7 a.m., a contest between the Southern Maine Law Enforcement All-Stars and the Portland Fire Department at 12 p.m. and a Portland Pirates vs. Albany River Rats contest at 4 p.m. The cost is $12. Maine Lacrosse training new officials

The Maine Lacrosse Officials Association (MLOA) needs more officials to support boys’ lacrosse at Maine high schools, middle school and youth events and is hosting a certification course beginning Feb. 28 at the North Yarmouth Academy (NYA) Middle School in Yarmouth.
