AUGUSTA — The Maine Attorney General’s office says two Lewiston police officers were justified when they shot and wounded a woman who had tried to run over one of the officers with a car.
The investigation says officers Raymond Vega and Keith Caouette acted in self-defense when they shot at 28-year-old Kristy Lee Cookson on Dec. 1.
Cookson was hit in the neck by a single shot fired by Caouette.
The investigation says a vehicle driven by Cookson refused to stop when Vega tried to pull it over. After a 2½-mile chase that reached speeds of 80 mph, the car crashed. Cookson then backed the car up in the direction of Caouette.
Caouette and Vega fired a total of five shots.
Cookson was charged with a variety of offenses.
